In this episode of Turning Leak Detection Into Repair Work, we perform a structural repair on a fiberglass coated concrete pool. The pool was suffering from structural cracking that caused a more than reasonable amount of water loss. During our leak detection, we identified the area where water was leaking and cut away the fiberglass coating on the pool to reveal the cracks. Fiberglass coating on a concrete pool often covers the visual aspects of seeing leaks, but water loss occurs the same way.

The homeowner made previous repair attempts using epoxy, or bubblegum, to stop the water loss. We can’t stress enough that epoxy is not a permanent solution to structural crack repairs, it is merely a band-aid. Epoxy will leak again, every time. To properly repair a structural crack, you need to install Torque Lock Structural Staples and finish the area with a spec-mix, or concrete repair.

Torque Lock Structural Staples are the only post-tension controlled-compression staple on the market. It’s patented design is used around the world to make permanent repairs on concrete structures. With its torque capability of up to 5000 lbs, securing a crack with Torque Lock Structural Staples ensures that the crack cannot spread, lengthen or continue when properly repaired.

When the staples have been installed, we penetrate the cracked area using a spec-mix and cover the staples, the interior of the crack and fill it completely with a permanent installation of concrete. It will adhere properly to the inside edges of the crack and the staples guarantee it won’t open or re-crack.

After the installation, we cover the area with a secondary layer of waterproofing as an added protection from water seepage. While it isn’t completely necessary, we like to give the customer all we can to provide the best customer service. Then we re-applied a layer of fiberglass to re-surface the pool and put it back into a leak free service.
